John Huston was rarely in better form than he was directing this 1948 study of gold fever and worse obsessions among an unlikely trio of prospectors (Humphrey Bogart, Tim Holt, and Walter Huston). Bogart is outstanding as the pathetic bully Fred C. Dobbs, and Walter Huston won a deserved Oscar for best supporting actor as a giddy, grizzled old-timer. Don’t forget, that’s Alfonso Bedoya who asks Bogie for a cigarette.
