On assignment for a food magazine, comedians Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon go on a six-day tour of northern England, a pretense for them to riff on such subjects as aging, history, and worldly success. Director Michael Winterbottom excerpted this casual lark of a feature from his BBC series, which was twice as long, and it can be seen as a follow-up to his semi-improvised comedy Tristram Shandy: A Cock and Bull Story (2005), which starred the same actors. That film was an engaging if shallow attempt to update Laurence Sterne’s first novel, Tristram Shandy; this one provides a comparable gloss on his second, A Sentimental Journey, with Coogan filling in for the author as cultured wise-ass. The movie offers enough good one-liners, both comic and ruminative, to hold one’s interest, but don’t expect much else.
