Fast-talking stand-up Kevin Hart and schlubby character actor Josh Gad make an entertaining duo in this lowbrow buddy comedy, playing off each other’s delivery styles to lively effect. Gad plays a rich loser who hires “professional best man” Hart to pose as his old friend in the week leading up to his nuptials, failing to mention that he’s told his future in-laws his “friend” is a priest. Screenwriters Jeremy Garelick and Jay Lavender don’t even try to make the premise seem plausible; rather, they use it as a springboard for screwball complications and verbal humor. The filmmakers also have good fun subverting gay, Jewish, and Latino stereotypes, though the female characters tend to be one-dimensional shrews or bimbos. Garelick directed.
