Americans may remember Mexican comedian Cantinflas only as David Niven’s butler in the wide-screen epic Around the World in Eighty Days, but he was a major star in Latin America. This 1940 feature (also known as That’s the Point) casts him as a wisecracking bum who infiltrates the home of a wealthy couple and gets caught up in a web of mistaken identity. The rapid-fire patter may not always survive the subtitling, but the rhythms are as funny as the content. Juan Bustillo Oro directed. In Spanish with subtitles. 112 min.
