Irit Batsry’s 2000 experimental video essay—a “documentary” set in the near future—was clearly influenced by French filmmaker Chris Marker (La jetee, Sans soleil). In the southern India state of Tamil Nadu, a rootless Western filmmaker searches for identity and personal meaning while traveling in the company of a half-blind tour guide. Visually, the work is often extraordinary, with superimpositions and elaborately layered images that bleed kaleidoscopically into each other. Stuart Jones’s marvelous sound track is a dense fusion of industrial noise, snatches of music, and mellifluous voices. I only wish Batsry had omitted the overly explicit narration, which undermines the volatile ambivalence of the striking imagery. 80 min.
