There’s a painful and revealing moment in this video documentary when Cubs legend Ron Santo, who has lost both legs to diabetes, falls off his walker and lands flat on his ass; with the buoyancy that has made him beloved at Wrigley Field, he shrugs off the embarrassment and pulls himself back up on his prostheses. Unfortunately, moments like this are few and far between, as director Jeff Santo (Ron’s son) lunges from one theme to the next: his father’s health problems, the heartbreaking rise and fall of the ’69 Cubs as recalled by various Chicago celebrities, a prolonged string of testimonials from sports figures as Santo’s Hall of Fame vote draws near. In a recent Sun-Times article Jeff said he purposely avoided taking a son’s perspective, which leaves him without much perspective at all. 86 min.
