This early film adaptation of Marcel Pagnol’s play (succeeded by at least two others) was directed in 1933 by Louis Gasnier (who, oddly enough, would direct Reefer Madness three years later); it also marks the film debut of the great Louis Jouvet in the title part—a mousy schoolteacher who eventually learns how to turn the tables on the business interests who exploit him; Edwige Feuillere costars.
