The Italian comedy star Toto seems unusually nonchalant in this 1963 vehicle, playing a hapless police chief who’s forced to deal with a paranoid husband (Peppino De Filippo), a rigid but corruptible customs officer (Nino Taranto), a tough-love priest (Aldo Fabrizi), and a loony who thinks he’s a colonel (Erminio Macario). The plot is threadbare, amounting to little more than a series of extended skits, and the buffoonish humor consists mostly of pratfalls and frantic wordplay. But the supporting players are all worthy foils, milking their shtick for all it’s worth, and Steno does a good job directing the traffic, if not the film. 98 min.
