“Be prepared” is the Girl Scouts’ motto, and viewers of this 2004 video documentary by Ellen Spiro and Karen Bernstein might want to prepare themselves as well: the troop in question, located in central Texas, is made up of girls whose mothers have done or are still doing time in state prison. During field trips to Hilltop Prison in Gatesville, the girls earn merit badges by bonding with their moms and videotaping their reunions. Though inspiring, the video steers clear of sentimentality; interviews with dedicated social workers and the prison’s jaded warden drive home the magnitude of the children’s loss and the difficulty of breaking the cycle of early pregnancy and crime.
