Twisted is right. Porn director Tatsumi Kumashiro took advantage of the loose controls at the faltering Nikkatsu studio to make personal films about sexuality in a changing society, but this 1973 effort includes a pair of ugly rape scenes whose existential significance somehow eluded me. A blank young rebel (Tetsu Oe) in a small fishing village works as a projectionist at the local grind house and bangs the owner’s wife in his spare time. During one of his brooding bicycle rides he spies a couple rutting in the tall grass and strikes up a voyeuristic relationship with them. Kumashiro meant the film as a study of sexual frustration among Japanese men, but the black bars obscuring everyone’s genitals must have driven them nuts. In Japanese with subtitles. 76 min.
