An unsubtitled video of a 1960 Italian film directed by and starring Pietro Germi, adapted from Carlo Emilio Gadda’s remarkable unfinished novel Quer pasticciaccio brutto de Via Merulana, a sort of Joycean police procedural in Roman slang, known in English as That Awful Mess on the Via Merulana. It’s hard to imagine what Germi could do in a film with Gadda’s verbal pyrotechnics, but if you know Italian here’s your chance to find out. With Claudio Gora, Franco Fabrizi, Cristina Gajoni, and Claudia Cardinale. Loyola University’s Wiley Feinstein will provide a brief introduction.
