Two searing videos about Afghanistan under the Taliban. In Where Women Are Banned (2000, 16 min.), Tassia Kobylinska presents the stories of three women, two of them told by professional actors because the subjects were, not unreasonably, afraid to be shown (one had been stabbed eight times, the other nearly burned to death). Sedika Mojadidi returned to Kabul after 23 years to make Kabul, Kabul (2000, 46 min.) and had to shoot furtively while outdoors; the distanced feeling captures the mood of one being silenced, though the indoor interviews are static and disengaged.
