Pixar hops on the 3-D animation juggernaut with this vivid adventure fantasy. The story follows a pint-size wannabe aviator and his tomboy best pal through courtship and a blissful but earthbound marriage; years later the hero, now a bitter old widower (given voice by Ed Asner), rigs his home with hundreds of helium balloons in hopes of making the South American trip he’d always promised his wife. When he and a young stowaway (Jordan Nagai) land in a mountain jungle populated by a gangly rare bird and a pack of talking dogs, the elderly crank finds himself way out of his comfort zone. Writer-directors Pete Docter and Bob Peterson present hilarious insights into bird brains and canine psychology and treat thornier human emotions deftly, ending with the felicitous truth that only by letting go of the past can we free ourselves to soar.
