This asthma-inducing adventure set on K2 starts out seeming as if its corny storytelling and phony-looking settings were designed to show that it’s as much about genre-movie conventions as anything else. But before the full cast of stock characters can be introduced, it’s clear they serve no larger purpose, and the action scenes are no consolation. As a photographer leading a rescue team with as little chance of survival as the climbers they’re after, Chris O’Donnell tries hard to take the part seriously. As the obvious villain—an entrepreneur—Bill Paxton conserves his energy. Martin Campbell (GoldenEye, The Mask of Zorro) directed a screenplay by Robert King and Terry Hayes; with Robin Tunney and Scott Glenn. 126 min.
