After becoming the first black screenwriter to win an Oscar (for Precious: Based on the Novel “Push” by Sapphire), Geoffrey Fletcher graduated to directing his own original script, whose forced whimsey contrasts sharply with the earlier movie’s dire tragedy. The title characters of this 2011 feature, named after the famous conjoined twins Violet and Daisy Hilton, are dainty teenage girls (Saoirse Ronan and 29-year-old Alexis Bledel) improbably employed as underworld assassins; their latest assignment takes an unexpected turn when their intended target (James Gandolfini) welcomes the chance to be put out of his misery. Fletcher must have thought the dark comedy would indemnify him against the cascading illogic of the plot. With Danny Trejo.
