How can you avoid a film that tells the true story of Buford Pusser? In this 1973 revenge drama, Joe Don Baker stars as the hapless sheriff who was nearly torn to pieces cleaning up a town full of pimps, gamblers, crooked politicians, murderers, and other sorts of bad guys. Director Phil Karson (99 River Street, The Brothers Rico, Ben) is at his best with this kind of shrieking, hysterical violence in the face of pervasive evil, so the carnage becomes less exploitative than collusive. With Elizabeth Hartman, Gene Evans, Noah Beery, and Rosemary Murphy. R, 125 min.
