Martin Rosen’s anti-Disney version (1978) of the Richard Adams novel about a band of rabbits migrating from low to high ground against a mythological background. Rosen goes out of his way to avoid Disney’s stylized movements and character touches, but ends by making his characters all look, sound, and act alike—conditions hardly hospitable to dramatic involvement. The animation may be naturalistic, but the fallacy is as pathetic as ever. A brief spark of imagination survives in a prologue sequence, designed by the great John Hubley before he was fired from the film. The rest is blandness.
