Producer Morgan Spurlock (Super Size Me) attempts to build a documentary around Reverend Billy and the Church of Stop Shopping Gospel Choir, a novelty act that parodies old-time religious revivals even as it highlights the dangers of consumerism and corporatism. Various chapters, introduced by animated burlesques of Christian art, focus on credit-card debt, advertising to children, the Wal-Marting of America, and other capitalist evils, all covered in greater depth elsewhere. Shot on a cross-country tour, the good reverend and his crew do their best to get busted at assorted corporate shrines (Disneyland, the Mall of America), but their media-driven antics serve only to underline Spurlock’s add-water-and-stir approach to political documentary.
