Curtis Harrington’s 1971 horror thriller, made in England, has a grim relation to “Hansel and Gretel.” A young orphan girl is kidnapped by Auntie Roo (Shelley Winters), and the orphan’s brother (Mark Lester), convinced that Auntie Roo is the reincarnation of Hansel and Gretel’s wicked witch, hurries to her rescue. As Erens describes it, part of the interest in this macabre tale is the degree to which evil is ascribed to the children.
