For this puerile farce, director John Hamburg (I Love You, Man) recycles a tired premise—a straitlaced father disapproves of his daughter’s freewheeling boyfriend—and then drowns it in moose urine (really). As the uptight midwestern patriarch, Bryan Cranston subjects himself to cringe-worthy sex gags and an embarrassing, extended poop joke; James Franco is reliably unpleasant as the boyfriend, a Silicon Valley gaming mogul who invites the family to stay at his mansion for Christmas. With Megan Mullally, Zoey Deutch, and Keegan-Michael Key as the billionaire’s kooky assistant, a role that verges on minstrelsy.
