Bridget Irish’s humorous long take of a muscular woman moving furniture in Nude Ascending Staircase (2001) seems by turns asexual and sexy: the mover is barely visible behind a dresser in a narrow passageway. Hummer, by and costarring the beautiful Guinevere Turner (Go Fish), is a minidrama about a hostess whose party is enlivened by quick sex—imagined and actual. Transgendered author Tennessee Jones gives an effective reading of a lushly evocative story about growing up queer in Appalachia in Shake the Rain, but director D. Robin Hammer’s superimposed imagery (smoke paired with the word “smoke,” for instance) seems superfluous. 75 min.
