Clark Gable was born to play Rhett Butler, Bogart to play Sam Spade, and now Crispin Glover achieves his apotheosis as Willard Stiles, the sniveling wretch who becomes king of the rats in this remake of the 1971 horror flick. Writer-director Glen Morgan (who scripted Final Destination) plays the story for creepy laughs most of the time—in the film’s best scene, a cat comes to a bad end in Willard’s house while Michael Jackson’s “Ben” plays on the sound track—but the chills are functional at best and the attempts at pathos negligible. 95 min.
