In his first Chicago appearance Austrian filmmaker Thomas Steiner will show six of his lush, playfully experimental, densely layered films outdoors at Studio 207. The abstract Ikonostasis II (1992) superimposes multiple layers of differently shaped and colored brushstrokes, which Steiner applied to glass; its fast, jagged rhythms are echoed in Steiner’s musical sound track without syncing too precisely. For Ikonostasis—Live (1994) he made long exposures as he walked with his camera at night, producing a dense skein of lines of light that recalls Ikonostasis II. Halle II (1998) is a portrait of a large building, its windows and rooms rapidly interwoven to create a fabriclike density. Supplementing the program, a one-hour loop of videos that starts at 6 PM. 43 min.
