Two Iranian boys, an orphan and a child of unfit parents, are released from reform school in Tehran and find themselves on their own in this fact-based 2000 drama by writer-director Mohammad Ali Talebi (The Willow and the Wind). Without anywhere to go they present a dilemma for their supervisors, who are sympathetic but stymied by bureaucratic indifference, and as the boys are sucked into the city’s more squalid precincts, Talebi paints a portrait of urban homelessness that is realistic but avoids sensationalism. As the abandoned kids, Ehsan Ghasemi and Siavash Lashkari display a dignity and maturity beyond their years. 87 min.
