Vincente Minnelli, in his high delirious period (Yolanda and the Thief), couldn’t have asked for a better vehicle than this unplotted MGM revue film, featuring every star on the lot with a claim to musical ability and a few without. The comedy sketches are atrocious, but Minnelli shines in the lavish musical numbers, which include two Fred Astaire-Lucille Bremer duets (the smoky “Limehouse Blues” and “This Heart of Mine”) and Astaire’s only appearance with Gene Kelly (a comic soft-shoe entitled “The Babbitt and the Bromide”). For camp lovers there’s an S and M Lucille Ball taming a troupe of tiger girls, not to mention Red Skelton, Fanny Brice, Esther Williams, Kathryn Grayson, and Mrs. Minnelli, Judy Garland. 110 min.
