Achim Wollscheid is a multimedia artist from Frankfurt, Germany, and even though what he makes is not really music, some of it just happens to function on a musical level. Much like Markus Popp’s work as Oval, Wollscheid’s art is concerned with creating systems–of sound, of lighting, of movement–rather than delivering a specific end. On 1996’s Moves (Selektion) he explored the resonances of kitchen objects, including cups, flatware, a bucket, a pot lid, and a chair, by hooking them up to electronic triggers that rattled them at varying rates. The resulting clattering and ringing were then layered in assorted densities, some of the combinations soothing and others fractured and jarring. One of his recent installations, Connective Memory, was set up to sample sounds made by schoolchildren walking through a corridor, store them digitally, and then play them back when similar live sounds were made. The presenters of his performance here tell me it’s a three-part deal that uses four video monitors, a theremin, and a quadraphonic sound system, and that it will be tailored to the space.
