Copresented by British music magazine the Wire and the Empty Bottle (1035 N. Western), the Adventures in Modern Music festival begins Wednesday, September 9, and runs through Sunday, September 13. As in past years, festival artists are getting a lot of love from Reader writers: on the List you’ll find Critic’s Choices on Andy Moor & DJ/Rupture and Hanne Hukkelberg (Thursday), A Hawk and a Hacksaw (Friday), and Phantom Orchard, the Subarachnoid Space, and Woods (Sunday). The fest makes it a point to book radically different acts on the same bill, a practice that encourages listeners to expose themselves to music they may not have come to see—the wide variety of performers lined up for the weekend also includes feel-good LA experimentalists Lucky Dragons, Italian avant-sludge combo Ovo, art-project glitch-pop weirdos Yacht, folky drone-doom duo Menace Ruine, and psychedelic garage rocker Ty Segall. All shows begin at 9 PM; admission to each show is $15 (except for Phantom Orchard, which is $18), and a five-day pass costs $50. For more info, call 773-276-3600 or visit emptybottle.com.
