One of a handful of African-American classical chamber performers, the Anderson Quartet is an ensemble on the rise. Still in their 20s, the quartet’s members–Marianne Henry and Marisa McLeod (violins), Diedra Lawrence (viola), and Michael Cameron (cello)–received training at the Eastman School and were coached by veterans of the Cleveland Quartet. They got together in 1989 and two years later named the group after the legendary singer Marian Anderson (who gladly gave her permission). Ever since then the group’s promise has been displayed through its fine musicianship, assured playing, and lively esprit de corps. The program for the quartet’s Chicago debut–part of North Park College’s chamber series–champions the music of black composers, including William Grant Still’s Ennanga, a colorful ode to an African harp. Also on the bill are major contributions to the string quartet genre by two of its greatest innovators: Beethoven’s Quartet in F Minor (aka Serioso) and Shostakovich’s Quartet no. 7.
