Avant_Mutek Chicago

Spawned from the high-profile Mutek festival of electronic music in Montreal, the Avant_Mutek series has already made stops in Vancouver and Toronto and visits four Chicago venues Thu-Sat 4/21-4/23. Self-described as a “not-for-profit organization dedicated to the dissemination and development of digital creativity in sound, music, and audiovisual art,” Mutek has booked shows on several continents, including high-profile events in Mexico City, Argentina, and Chile. Thursday’s free opening performance at 6:30 PM at the Chicago Cultural Center (78 E. Washington) features composer Thierry Gauthier followed by Gemmiform, a multidisciplinary collective that combines electronic music from DJ and producer Stephen Beaupre, acoustic improvisation from the Banjo Consorsium, and live visual artwork. Danish electronic-music producer Trentemoller performs with a live band at the Mid (306 N. Halsted) at 9 PM that same evening, with Dorit Chrysler and Decimal opening. Bottom Lounge’s upstairs Volcano Room (1375 W. Lake) hosts Friday night’s event, beginning at 9 PM with Frankie Vega & Sevron and followed by Stephen Beaupre. Smart Bar (3730 N. Clark) wraps up the festival at 10 PM on Saturday with performances stretching into the wee hours from Monolake, Echospace, Karl Meier, and Chris Widman. Ticket prices vary from venue to venue.
