Girls Rock! Chicago and LivingRoom Gallery host a benefit poster show and sale on Saturday, November 7, celebrating women and transgender musicians. Local artists including Jessica Caponigro, Dan Grzeca, Alana Bailey, Ethan D’Ercole, Erin Page, and Zissou Tasseff-Elenkoff have printed posters of greats such as Patti Smith, Sade, Kathleen Hanna, and Beyonce. The organizers have shared several online (bit.ly/gr_lrg), and the images of Nina Simone and FKA Twigs are phenomenal! A portion of proceeds from print sales benefits GR!C. The event begins at 7 PM at LivingRoom (1530 W. Superior) and features tunes from DJ Sarah Frier, beer from Revolution, and treats from Sweet Cakes.
Changes are afoot at the Hideout. Talent buyer Seth Dodson has bid the charming dive adieu, and taking his place is Sullivan Davis, who’s been moving into the new gig for a couple weeks and takes over full-time November 15. Davis joined the Hideout family as a booking intern around three years ago, and he’s also worked the door and tended bar. Last year he launched the Resonance Series, a monthly ambient/noise showcase in the bar’s front room; on Wednesday, November 11, it hosts Spa Moans, Chemtrails, and Emeralds’ Mark McGuire.
If you follow Chicago’s vibrant free-jazz and new-music scenes, you might know the online calendar at now-is.org. Run by dedicated fan Tushar Samant, it lists bazillions of local shows in venues large and small. The website recently launched the Now Is Podcast, with interviewer Ben Remsen talking to and diving into the work of bass clarinetist Jason Stein, former U.S. Maple guitarist Mark Shippy, composer Olivia Block, and others.
