A cool new record label in Chicago? Gossip Wolf says yes, please! A few months ago, punk rocker Jamie Girlsville (who grew up in Naperville) moved back to Chicago from San Francisco, where she used to run the rad label Show and Tell, which released tunes from the likes of John Dwyer’s pre-Thee Oh Sees band Coachwhips and garage rockers the Hipshakes. Her new imprint, Girlsville, launches with a slew of rad projects, including a tape from 90s New York punks the Prissteens and a compilation called Stupid Punk Boy with Coachwhips, Julia Cafritz’s post-Pussy Galore/pre-Free Kitten group STP, and mid-90s UK riot grrrls Golden Starlet. Sales of Stupid Punk Boy will benefit Chicago House’s Translife Center, and Girlsville is raising money to offset production costs; you can donate through GoFundMe.
Gossip Wolf hasn’t heard from local drone-psych quartet Implodes in so long that we thought they might be kaput (two members have been on the road, guitarist Matt Jencik with Slint and bassist Emily Elhaj with Angel Olsen). We were wrong! Jencik says the band is releasing a 12-inch EP called Reverser on Oshkosh label Gilead Media in March; it features two recent tracks and two jams from the sessions for 2013’s epic Recurring Dream.
Gossip Wolf digs the nocturnal euphoria of local electro-pop duo Celine Neon—their “Getcha Good” video is pure glow-in-the-dark madness. The band performs with Tricky Ol’ Puss and Old Timey on Fri 2/13 at the Promontory for Slideluck IV, a combination concert, potluck, and art show. The potluck starts first at 8 PM; admission is a dish to share or a $5 donation.
On Fri 2/13 Cole’s hosts what its organizers hope will become an annual tradition: the Mardi Gras party Festa Carnevale. Vaya, Nervous Passenger, Kangaroo, and Young Marshall play—and though the weather won’t feel like N’awlins, there will be beads!
