Pitchfork weekend is prime time for Gossip Wolf’s favorite activity—ogling stars, scenesters and hangers-on from hither and yon as they get their mingle on with local music peeps! White Mystery fireball Alex White gabbed with Swans drummer Thor Harris, and Twin Peaks guitarist Cadien Lake James (who was being pushed around in a wheelchair by his buddies) got chummy with various Dum Dum Girls. Maybe he told them the truth about how he broke his ankle? We heard three different stories from three different people, and we don’t believe any of ’em! Nobody falls off a 32-story high-rise and lives! We saw the slouching Jay and Bey of indie rock—aka Diiv dude Zachary Cole Smith and Sky Ferreira—so many times around town we considered asking them out for dinner. Since this wolf prefers a Dumpster to a dinner plate, they probably would’ve said no. But Ms. Ferreira wasn’t saying no to folks asking to take selfies with her—the squawky crew of teenage Pitchfork volunteers we saw her indulge in the VIP section can testify to that. You’re a good egg, Sky.
But that’s not all! On Friday we sighted Oshwa’s Alicia Walter from afar and chopped it up backstage with Chicago rapper Chris Crack. On Saturday we dapped MC Tree and Sulaiman in VIP, picked up snacks with Save Money rapper Joey Purp, and ran into a shirtless Taylor Bennett after Danny Brown’s set. On Sunday we rode the Ashland bus with rapper-singer Noname Gypsy, talked about tapes with Pugs Atomz, spotted SPF420 cofounder Chaz Allen in the Kendrick crowd, and saw Sharkula at the CHIRP Record Fair.
Speaking of Taylor Bennett, he’s playing an afternoon fund-raiser at Reggie’s Rock Club on Sat 7/26—it’s part of his ongoing #SaveChicago antiviolence campaign, and proceeds go to south-side nonprofit Kids Off the Block. The all-ages show costs $7, or $3 in advance; doors open at 2 PM.
