Cymbal- and "little percussion"-less Frank Rosaly

Ubiquitous improvising drummer Frank Rosaly has become the latest Chicago musician hit by thieves. Friday afternoon Rosaly, who lives in Ukrainian Village, went to find his car—a dark blue ’98 Honda Civic—only to discover it had been stolen. Even worse, it had a slew of equipment inside, including a pair of 1970s Zildjian hi-hats, a Zilco cymbal from the 1940s, an Istanbul Apog 30th-anniversary ride, a suitcase full of drum hardware, and an army surplus rucksack filled with rattles, bells, triangles, and other “little percussion.” None of it was insured against theft, and after word got out, Experimental Sound Studio manager and fellow drummer Adam Vida got in touch about setting up a benefit show to help Rosaly replace his lost gear (vintage cymbals are stupid expensive) and his car. It’ll be Friday night at 8:30 at ESS, but the bill hadn’t been nailed down by press time; check the Bleader for updates.

Last week Indiana label Captcha released “Shit Pig” b/w “Unborn Oppressor,” the first seven-inch by proggy local death-thrash trio Zath—aka guitarist Zack Weil (Cacaw), drummer Seth Sher (Ga’an), and bassist Dan Browning (Cave). Sher says there’s more from the band on the way: they just finished recording a full-length with Sanford Parker at Soma studios, which they’re shopping to labels and plan to release next year. Sher also wrapped up a collection from his solo project, Psychic Steel, which should come out on Captcha within six months.

Looking for a festival this weekend that’s a little more “alternative” than Lollapalooza? Then try Gnarfest, a daylong celebration of underground punk. The bill includes several standout locals, including knotty noise-rock four-piece Spanyurd and new skramz band Lord Snow, plus ragged New Jersey punks Spook Houses, Philadelphia new-emo group Algernon Cadwallader, and lots more—nearly 30 in all. Oh, and one set will be a “Circle of Death”—a four-band round-robin. Gnarfest is Sat 8/4 and kicks off at 1 PM; e-mail for location and other details.
