Lo-fi darling Jimmy Whispers teams up with the Empty Bottle on Sun 10/12 to throw a benefit called Hoop Dreams for Chicago-based violence-prevention initiative CeaseFire—and the lineup is nutso! Local musicians—including Hollywood Holt and members of Smith Westerns, Twin Peaks, Mines, the Lemons, and Heavy Times—will form four teams and face off in a one-day basketball tournament, complete with color commentary. Live music will be provided by Starfoxxx, Radar Eyes, Magic Milk, Jimmy Whispers, and DJ Gant-Man, who performs with footwork crew the Era. Admission is a $5 suggested donation, and the fun starts at noon at 1834 W. Chicago.
Gossip Wolf will always have a soft spot for bands from the northwest burbs—as a pup we foraged in the record stores of McHenry County—but we’d like melodic death-metal quartet Starkill even if they weren’t from Cary, Illinois! On Tue 10/14, the band will release their scathing second LP, Virus of the Mind; the video for the hooky “Before Hope Fades” features a damsel in distress, a creepy dude in a bird mask, and tons of supremely symphonic riffing. Their current label, Century Media, has also posted behind-the-scenes “making of” videos to YouTube! Starkill travels east to tour with Arch Enemy in a few weeks, but on Sat 11/1 they’ll be back in Chicago to headline LiveWire Lounge with Beyond Deth and Scars of Armageddon.
For those looking to get into the spirit of the season, on Sat 10/11 the Logan Square Auditorium hosts the second annual Fall Ball. B-52s singer Fred Schneider DJs (alongside local heavy hitters Impala Sound) and calls out dance moves so folks can sync up their mashed potatoes and twists. Garage heavies Outer Minds cover doo-wop and R&B tunes with a series of guest vocalists—could Schneider be one? You’ll have to show up to find out. Tickets are $20 at the door, and the ball starts at 8 PM.
