Legs McNeil and Punk magazine, the cartoonish proto-zine he cofounded in 1975, had as much to do with the mid-70s NYC punk-rock aesthetic as the Ramones or Blondie. And Please Kill Me, his oral history of the era’s visionaries and their druggy, sexy debaucheries, should be required reading for anyone in a leather jacket shouting snot into a microphone. McNeil will appear at Late Bar on Tue 10/2 at 8PM to declaim classic segments of PKM and a new secret project he’s been scribbling down.
Since catching the annual AfroPunk Festival in Brooklyn in 2005, Illaziam bassist Ed Perkins has desired to “bring together Chicago bands of color to step out of the stereotypical labels of ‘black music’ and strengthen the black rock community.” And it seems like the inaugural Black Dot Music Festival at Elastic on Sat 9/29 should do just that. The nine-act bill includes funk rock band Room 11, folky singer-songwriter LeAnna Eden and power trio the Moses Gun. The show kicks off at 5 PM; knock two bucks off the $12 cover by bringing a nonperishable food item.
Mountain Dew is rolling out promo videos for a Chicago-themed soda can, and they’ve got plenty of local flavor. In one, MC Chance the Rapper and Fake Shore Drive founder Andrew Barber talk about their community over cans of Dew. “They had, like, a blue flavor, a red flavor, an orange flavor,” Barber says. “I just stuck to the original.” The videos are part of the crowd-sourced Lil Wayne “DeWeezy” ad campaign and last week began appearing on every website in the Complex Media Network. Another clip features Lacuna Lofts owner Joe Cacciatore talking with graffiti artist Hebru Brantley, and on Tuesday the network dropped videos of Leaders’ creative director Vic Lloyd chatting with Treated Crew and Sir Michael Rocks talking with Kids These Days.
