Gossip Wolf has mentioned Pilsen darkwave band Population before, and for good reason—their excellent gloomy tunes usually come in equally compelling packages. Their first demo tape came in a hand-printed sleeve sealed with red candle wax, and the two-song cassette they made for a January west-coast tour is bound in twine. Their brand-new 45, due from Chicago garage-rock tastemakers HoZac later this month, is just on yellow wax, but the sample track online, “White Crosses,” shows our black-clad friends in fine, ferocious form. Population plays a dual record-release show with Implodes on Mon 4/8 at the Empty Bottle.
We can’t get enough of Internet cooking shows that combine a love of good food with a lust for the devil’s music, but the Vegan Black Metal Chef doesn’t always do the trick—this wolf is a carnivore! Good thing Gossip Wolf has discovered Brutally Delicious, a metal-themed cooking show on ifood.tv that host Bruce Moore describes as “Rachael Ray meets Headbangers Ball.” Moore recently linked horns with the dudes in local metal trio Arbogast, who made blue-cheese burgers topped with seitan chili and buffalo sauce from a recipe by guitarist Mike Scheid. “Of course we had to use pretzel-roll buns,” says vocalist and bassist Aaron Roemig. “Definite tribute to Kuma’s.” Arbogast’s video is at bit.ly/arburger, and on Thu 3/14 at Ultra Lounge they open for Guzzlemug and Behold the Arctopus.
Speaking of metal, this wolf just got wind of The Metal David Byrne, a new EP by local rock trio Geronimo. It’s the third entry in the band’s ongoing cassette series, Buzz Yr Girlfriend, and Brooklyn label Exploding in Sound will release it on Fri 3/29, the group’s fifth birthday. To celebrate their wooden anniversary, Geronimo will make last year’s Exanimate LP a free download for five days, beginning the day the EP drops.
