Spotted at last weekend’s Pitchfork Music Festival: On Friday Coco Gordon Moore (18-year-old daughter of Sonic Youth’s Gordon and Moore) stopped by the HoZac Records table to drop off a demo by her band, Big Nils. (This Wolf took a spin around their Bandcamp page, and it sounds like they have the HoZac aesthetic down cold!) On Saturday locally grown comedian and 30 Rock writer Hannibal Buress took in Schoolboy Q’s set from the VIP section while Chicago cult rapper Sharkula smoked up with some fans before Hot Chip. On Sunday this Wolf saw local punks Ryan Lowry (SkrapÂyard, ex-Raw Nerve) and Eric Frankel (Divine Right) onstage as Chief Keef, Lil Reese, and Young Chop dropped in on AraabÂMuzik. (Keef is also rumored to be a secret surprise booking Sat 8/4 at Lollapalooza.) Earlier in the day, we kept getting tips from little monsters that Lady Gaga was backstage at Kendrick Lamar; we scarcely believed it until we saw her Ladyship (in a wicked MadonnaÂesque bustier) with our own eyes, right before she and her motorcade split.
We’re sad to report that Ukrainian Village vinyl specialists Favorite Records are closing their brick-and-mortar shop (1535 W. Division) at the end of August. “We gave it our best shot,” owner Morry Barak tells Gossip Wolf, “but realize that the ledger books don’t lie.” On Thu 7/19 the store will begin selling its entire stock (about 7,000 LPs and 20,000 45s) at 50 percent off and taking offers on its amazing custom record racks. Barak hopes Favorite will be able to do an occasional pop-up, maybe for the holidays and Record Store Day; follow the shop on Facebook for updates.
On Fri 8/17 at the Empty Bottle, local garage stalwarts Mannequin Men will play a final show with bassist and Reader music critic Miles Raymer, who’s moving to NYC. The gig is billed as the group’s last, but Raymer isn’t so sure. “It might just be the last show for a while,” he says.
