Last week Hozac released No Future, the debut LP from Bay Area power punks Wax Idols. They kinda sound like Joan Jett fronting the Kinks if they were all covered in barbed wire—good stuff! Lead singer and guitarist Hether Fortune resided in our fair city before heading to San Fran to seek fame and fortune—local yokels might remember her time drumming for Bare Wires under her given name, Heather Fedewa. On Sun 11/6 Wax Idols will play for free at Logan Square bar Cole’s; it’s their first Chicago show, and it starts at 10 PM.
Director and producer David Bettencourt was in town last weekend to get some final Chicago footage for his Screeching Weasel documentary, What We Hate. The occasion? Capturing Ben Weasel’s return to the stage. Saturday’s show at Reggie’s Rock Club was the first Screeching Weasel gig since Ben infamously punched two women at the band’s SXSW date in March. Bettencourt tells Gossip Wolf he hopes to have a rough cut done by spring so he can get it to some major film festivals, but he says a summer release is more likely.
Milk nearly shot out of this Wolf’s snout the other night during the pilot episode of the Kelsey Grammer-as-Chicago-mayor political drama Boss. That’s because Gossip Wolf noticed Mia Park, aka Chic-a-Go-Go cohost Miss Mia, playing a volunteer at the medical clinic where the mayor’s daughter works. Here’s hoping this Wolf’s furry friend Ratso nabs a cameo, perhaps as a rodent with a coffee-grounds addiction! Anyway, Mia has been a professional actor since 2000; though her scene in last year’s Will Ferrell buddy-cop-and-Ponzi-scheme comedy, The Other Guys, ended up cut, you’ll be able to catch her in cinemas soon. She’s in The Catastrophe, a new indie mystery about a traveling cigar salesman, which will premiere during the Illinois International Film Festival. It goes down Sat 11/19 at 3 PM at the Viaduct Theatre.
