Ribfest Chicago runs Fri-Sun 6/10-6/12 and promises not only 50,000 pounds of barbecued pork but also 25 hours of music on two stages. Located at the intersection of Lincoln, Irving Park, and Damen, the fest starts Friday at 5 PM; indie-rock acts like My Gold Mask and Jukebox the Ghost play the south stage, while the north stage hosts RibMania (allegedly the midwest’s only professional rib-eating competition) and honky-tonk punks the Legendary Shack Shakers (whose current lineup includes Jesus Lizard guitarist Duane Denison). On Saturday and Sunday the music starts at noon. On Saturday the south-stage lineup includes Four Star Brass Band, Like Pioneers, and Ezra Furman & the Harpoons; on the north stage, it’s the Dirty Pigeons, Colin Gilmore, Fort Frances, and the Waco Brothers. On Sunday the south stage features Bailiff, the Ettes, Tapes ‘n Tapes, and more, while the north-stage lineup includes Common Shiner, Nathan Xander & Witchouse, and Hayes Carll. The fest ends at 10 PM on all three days. Vendors at Ribfest include 30 Chicago-area restaurants, who of course can compete for the title of Best Ribs. Kids Square, open Saturday and Sunday from noon till 6 PM, provides games, music, and a play area for the little ones. Admission is a $5 suggested donation, which helps fund community activities and local outreach programs via the Northcenter Chamber of Commerce’s philanthropy committee.
