Archie Powell & the Exports

International Pop Overthrow

Founded 13 years ago in Los Angeles, the International Pop Overthrow festival now has a presence in 17 cities—including Liverpool, where the IPO books shows at the Cavern Club, made famous by the Beatles. For its tenth anniversary in Chicago the fest is taking over two clubs, the Abbey Pub (3420 W. Grace) and the Red Line Tap (7006 N. Glenwood), and together they’ll host 13 shows between Thu 4/14 and Sat 4/23. The lineups mainly consist of midwestern power-pop, rock, and punk bands, among them Archie Powell & the Exports, Van Go, the Penthouse Sweets, the Wanton Looks, and Kaiserkeller. Considering that the IPO shares its name with a popular Material Issue album, the big draw will certainly be Material Re-Issue on the fest’s final day: the two surviving members of that long-defunct Chicago band, Ted Ansani and Mike Zelenko, are teaming up with Phil Angotti, who’ll play the role of late front man Jim Ellison. Admission is always $10, and on weekends the Abbey Pub hosts two shows, one in the afternoon and one at night; see Rock, Pop, Etc listings or for lineups and other details. —Kevin Warwick
