Local label Maximum Pelt takes over the Empty Bottle on Mon 11/10 to throw a record-release show for three of its bands. Label head Magic Ian headlines with his genre-melting three-piece Ego (formerly Massive Ego), and we’re hoping they’ll play the blazing B side off their new single, “Can’t Shut It Off” b/w “Sunlight.” Openers Foul Tip and Gossip Wolf faves Lil Tits celebrate a split seven-inch; Foul Tip’s minimal postpunk stomper “Madness” (the A side) complements the blistering dirt rock of Lil Tits’ two B-side numbers, “New Digs” and “5 Finger Grind.” “Surf grunge” act Perfume, which recently released a self-titled cassette on Maximum Pelt, plays first; the show starts at 9 PM.
Gossip Wolf should’ve been paying attention in 2012, when local label Pretty All Right released a self-titled tape from house and techno musician Chicago Jim. It’s got enough squelchy synths, warm analog tones, and propulsive 808 beats to fill your headphones for days! London dance-music label Lobster Theremin didn’t sleep on it: Last week, as its first full-length release, it reissued Chicago Jim as a deluxe two-LP set with postcards and stickers. Chicago Jim says a local record-release show or some DJ gigs might be in the offing; he moved back here in 2012 after spending eight years in Canada studying forestry.
Local footwork producer and Teklife member Boylan (aka Nate Boylan) dropped two EPs earlier this year (Boylan Itz 2K14 Itz Time for Some Boylan in January and Ima Rockstar Im Not a Rockstar in March), and last week he dropped a full-length, The Renegadez Volume 1. We dig “Talkin Shit’s a No-No,” which marries pileups of fluttery percussion with a sample of King Louie‘s “He’s on Fire,” and “Renegadez,” which features a cameo from Boylan’s daughter Izzy. Boylan has more music on the way too—he contributed to Teklife’s Next Life compilation, which Hyperdub will release Tue 11/11.
