Gossip Wolf has seen goofy, glammy Chicago four-piece MTVghosts slay at a slew of local shows—and last weekend the self-proclaimed “dreampunk” band dropped Tri-Pop, a free eight-song album, via Bandcamp. This wolf thinks the hooky “She’s Really Mine” and “Apology” have more than a passing resemblance to Todd Rundgren’s mid-70s AM radio-style pop. MTVghosts plan to give Tri-Pop a physical release through FeelTrip Records early next year. In the meantime, they’ll play an all-ages show at Martyrs’ on Fri 12/19.

Diana Lawrence and her band are experts at offering heaping helpings of holiday cheer—for the third year in a row, they’ve organized a seasonal shindig to help out a local nonprofit. Diana & the Dishes headline the annual Woman Power Holiday Show at Schubas on Mon 12/22 with soul sextet Everybody Says Yes and the Lara Filip folk-pop project Birdie Wing; the $15 cover benefits Global Girls, a performing arts and theater organization for girls that’s based in the South Shore neighborhood.

On Saturday 12/20, classical cassette label Parlour Tapes hosts a holiday variety show at Constellation to benefit Snow City Arts, which provides arts instruction (in painting, writing, filmmaking, and more) to young patients in city hospitals; the lineup includes folks from Walkabout Theater and the Neo-Futurists and a house band led by bedroom-pop maven Richard Album, and the night ends with a dance party.

On Sun 12/21 from 2 till 8 PM, the Little Black Pearl (1060 E. 47th St.) hosts a “celebration of life” for poet, educator, and artist Mike Hawkins, aka Brother Mike, who died Wed 12/3. As part of genre-bending group POETREE Chicago, Hawkins helped bring together the worlds of hip-hop and poetry; as a mentor at YouMedia he inspired a generation of aspiring MCs who are now shaping the city’s hip-hop scene, among them Chance the Rapper, Saba, and Noname Gypsy.
