They’re closing this place to make way for the el expansion. It’s sad–this was my hangout for a long time. Once I was sitting at the end of the bar when one of the late-shift bartenders came in with a really attractive blond. She sat down next to me and we started chatting. She explained that she was in from California for a wedding and that she’d grown up in Evanston. We talked for a good 45 minutes about the midwest and other things, nothing out of the ordinary. Then someone walking by suddenly freaked out and shrieked at her, “Oh my God, you’re Tamara Braun–Carly from General Hospital!” She signed an autograph, talked for a minute with the fan about the show, thanked them, and then went right back to our conversation as if nothing had happened. I’d had no idea who she was. This happened again one night when Jeremy Piven was here. I didn’t know who he was either. But I’m not immune to celebrities. One night at another spot I turned to my left and Michael Jordan was sitting next to me. Now him I recognized!
