Featuring two stages of music and a purported 65,000 pounds of ribs and barbecue, the 12th annual Ribfest Chicago runs Fri-Sun 6/11-6/13, on Lincoln between Irving Park and Warner. For the first time you can not only enjoy some ribs yourself but also watch professional competitive eaters tear into them—on Friday at 6 PM the festival is hosting its inaugural RibMania, with 12 contestants vying for more than $2,000 in prize money. True to form Ribfest also has an impressive lineup of music by local and national acts. Friday’s festivities begin at 5 PM with a roster that includes the Ike Reilly Assassination, local Americana hero Robbie Fulks, and “circus punk marching band” Mucca Pazza. The gates open at noon for Ribfest’s other two days; among the notable acts on Saturday are Califone, Generationals, the Bottle Rockets, Those Darlins, and Unicycle Loves You, and on Sunday they include the Whigs, Langhorne Slim, These United States, and the Dig. All three days wrap up at 10 PM. The Kids Square (on the north side of Belle Plaine between Lincoln and Damen) features performances by the Trinity Irish Dancers, interactive demonstrations by the Museum of Science and Industry, a Nature’s Creatures animal show, music from the Old Town School, mini golf, bounce houses, and a drawing for a bicycle donated by the Easy Rider Bike Shop. Admission is a $5 suggested donation (with an additional $5 for Kids Square, which gets you a spot in the drawing), and proceeds benefit local school and outreach programs; last year’s beneficiaries included Friends of Bell School, Concordia Place, and the Lane Tech Lacrosse Boosters.
