Chosen Few Reunion Weekend What started in 1990 as a small picnic featuring a group of old friends from the early days of house music has grown into a four-day festival that includes a kickoff at the Shrine on Thu 7/5, a preparty at the Mid on Fri 7/6, an afterparty at L26 on Sat 7/7, and a sendoff show at the Shrine on Sun 7/8—and of course the picnic itself, which runs from 7 AM to 8 PM on Sat 7/7 in Jackson Park and is expected to draw roughly 20,000 people. Performers throughout the weekend include Al Ester, Linda Clifford, Wayne Williams, Louie Vega, Kevin Hedge, Leroy Burgess, and of course the Chosen Few DJs (Wayne Williams, Alan King, Jesse Saunders, Tony Hatchett, Terry Hunter, and Andre Hatchett). Each event’s price is different, and various ticket packages are available; general admission to the picnic alone is $10. International Festival of Life This massive five-day festival brings some of the world’s biggest Afro-Caribbean musicians to Washington Park. Kicking off Wed 7/4 and ending Sun 7/8, it hosts a lineup heavy on top-shelf reggae and dancehall, including Beres Hammond, Tarrus Riley, Queen Ifrica, Third World, Richie Stephens, Ken Boothe, Enchantment, and Rooby Man. On Thursday the main stage is given over to the International Reggae & World Music Awards, emceed by Tony Rebel; among the honorees and performers are Rita Marley, Marcia Griffiths, and Judy Mowatt. Single-day admission is $10, or $15 after 5 PM; for children ages 6-12 and seniors it’s $5, and kids under 6 get in free. Lincoln Park Arts & Music Festival The fourth annual Lincoln Park Arts & Music Festival hosts artists, vendors, and live music from noon to 10 PM on Sat 7/7 and Sun 7/8 along Racine between Fullerton and Webster. The entertainment includes Sister Hazel, Tyrone Wells, Dot Dot Dot (not Thymme Jones’s old band), Jon Drake & the Shakes, the Handcuffs, Super Happy Fun Club, and the Wanton Looks.
