Gossip Wolf is sad to report that Haki, one of Chicago’s best young bands, broke up after a show in Pilsen on Fri 5/8. Drummer Ruby Dunphy posted the news on the group’s Facebook page Saturday, and explained Haki’s sudden demise: “Our advice to make a long lasting band is don’t date someone in your band.” Dunphy also wrote that all four members of Haki will continue making music in other contexts—this wolf hopes that whatever comes next is as killer as Haki’s Big New EP and last year’s ace full-length Positive.
On Sat 5/16 local label Homhomhom hosts a pop-up record shop at the Hideout; come for the vinyl and the Dark Matter coffee, stay for sets by Aleph Eris and Blue Cloud. Admission is $10—which includes three “vinyl tickets” you can use toward records—and the event starts at 3 PM.
Minimalist local pop group Weatherman—who describe their moody jams as “Midnight in the Garden of Brian Eno”—have released a string of singles this spring on Pennsylvania label La Societe Expeditionnaire, to be topped off by an EP later this year. This week, Weatherman dropped “Night Games” b/w “Dopamine” on Soundcloud, and on Sun 5/17 they play a release show at Rainbo with Oscillator Bug, the weirdo psych-pop project of Shapers front dude Zaid Maxwell.
At noon on Sat 5/16, University of Chicago radio station WHPK hosts this year’s Summer Breeze outdoor festival on the northeast corner of the main quad. It may turn out to be optimistically named, but let’s hope for T-shirt weather! Summer Breeze is free and open to the public, and the lineup includes Gossip Wolf-approved locals Ono, Lil Tits, and Toupee, plus UK soundscape specialists Tape Loop Orchestra, New Orleans queercore no-wavers TV-MA, and a crew of WHPK DJs. If the weather turns to shit, the music will likely move to the university’s Reynolds Club. v
