After transforming itself into a 15th-birthday bash for Bloodshot Records in 2009 and a daylong Mad Decent throwdown in 2010, the Hideout Block Party is back to its old ways for the venue’s own 15th birthday. It starts at noon this Saturday (9/24) out in front of the club at 1354 W. Wabansia and in the parking lot of the nearby Streets & Sans truck hangars, and this year’s marquee names are local indie-folk juggernaut Andrew Bird and gospel and R&B legend Mavis Staples. Other acts include Jon Langford with the Burlington Welsh Male Chorus, soul and blues man Booker T. Jones, the Eternals, White Mystery, and Kids These Days. The show opens with the epic jam session that is the Vision Celestial Guitarkestra, led by Plastic Crimewave (aka Steve Krakow), who invites everyone with a guitar to join—past Guitarkestras have topped 70 players. Advance tickets from the Hideout’s website are $25, and admission at the gate is $35; children ten and under get in free. There will of course be food and adult beverages for sale throughout the day.
