Pardon me for cribbing a line from R. Kelly, but “after the show is the afterparty.” As Pitchfork goes dark each night in Union Park, a slew of shindigs get popping all over the city. A handful have Pitchfork’s official seal of approval, among them Autre Ne Veut’s show on Sun 7/21 at Lincoln Hall; many others are merely associated with the festival, mostly by virtue of featuring one or more festival acts (Savages and Parquet Courts play a live Sound Opinions taping on Thu 7/18 at Lincoln Hall) or bands that have gotten some love from the site (Wolf Eyes, Pharmakon, and Marshstepper play Sat 7/20 at Bottom Lounge).
The notorious Bitchpork counterfestival isn’t returning this year, but that hardly means that Chicago’s DIY community will be sitting out the weekend: the Rotted Tooth label is throwing a Friday-Saturday spectacular with the likes of Wolf Eyes, Bitchin Bajas, Running, Oozing Wound, and Rectal Hygienics (buy a ticket online and the organizers will tell you the venue). On Fri 7/19 another off-the-grid venue hosts the latest party in the P2 series (organized by the Saturday Youth collective) with a great lineup of hot local hip-hop and R&B that includes Sasha Go Hard, Supreme Cuts, the GTW, Kit, DJ Earl, and Bengfang. At the admittedly aboveground Cobra Lounge (just up Ashland from the festival grounds), Cobrafest runs Fri 7/19 through Sun 7/21, with sets from the Bronx, King Dude, and White Mystery, among others.
