Freelance Whales

Schubas, which has hosted Tomorrow Never Knows on its own for the past five years, opened sister venue Lincoln Hall in October, and the new club’s larger room means the festival’s 2010 bookings are more ambitious than ever. Tomorrow Never Knows began Wednesday, January 13, and its solid lineup of indie rock, pop, and soul runs through Sunday, January 17. Acts playing Lincoln Hall include the Voxtrot, Atlas Sound, Bowerbirds, the Rural Alberta Advantage, Julie Doiron, and Lee Fields, and the lineup at Schubas is nothing to sneeze at either—among the artists appearing there are Surfer Blood, Freelance Whales, Neon Indian, Final Fantasy, Sharon Van Etten, and Clues. Saturday and Sunday at 2 PM Schubas presents all-ages shows with the Paul Green School of Rock All-Stars ($12, $10 in advance). All evening shows are 18+ and $15, regardless of venue. Five-day passes cost $75 and include several perks: a free Tomorrow Never Knows 2010 poster, a sampler CD, and free rides (courtesy of Zipcar) between Lincoln Hall, Schubas, and select CTA stops.
