The 22nd edition of Viva! Chicago, billed as a salute to the bicentennials of Colombian and Mexican independence and the centennial of the Mexican Revolution, runs Fri 9/17 and Sat 9/18 in a new location—after years at Grant Park, it’s moved a couple blocks north to Millennium Park (Michigan and Randolph). The festival features a mix of salsa, mariachi, son jarocho, banda, samba, Latin house, and other Spanish-language pop at four performance areas: Los Barrios (north promenade), Salon de Baile (south promenade), En Vivo (near Cloud Gate), and Pritzker Pavilion. Friday’s Pritzker acts include Mexican pop singer Cristian Castro, Mariachi Los Camperos de Nati Cano, and Don Tetto; Saturday’s include Colombian salsa and cumbia singer Carolina La O, local Mexican folk group Sones de Mexico, and DJ and producer Camilo Lara with his electronic-music project the Mexican Institute of Sound. The Kid’s Zone offers arts and crafts, bilingual storytelling, and White Sox prize giveaways. The music begins at noon each day and wraps up by 8:30 PM; festival hours are 11 AM till 9 PM.
